Random thoughts on Bitcoin's being a medium of exchange

The idea here may not be original; somebody probably has thought this before but I never saw it.

  1. Bitcoin doesn't even need the "lightning network" or bigger size blocks to become a prevalent medium of payment. Bitcoin backed/pegged stable coins (such as Wrapped Bitcoin which is an ERC20 token) can solve this problem of handling a large number of payments. You can even use “Satoshi backed“ cryptocurrencies and divide the value of Satoshis if needed.

  1. The real issue to become a global currency for Bitcoin may be the fixed amount of supply that is considered to be a significant merit by many. This will cause fluctuations in its price during times of booms and busts. A second issue may be that fixed maximum supply doesn’t mean that the number of coins in circulation will not change: It may drop because there are many people losing access to their wallets and coins. We don’t know how the supply will change but we can estimate that there will not be a dramatic fall.

In sum, bitcoin’s price is likely to remain too volatile to be used as a medium of exchange. Yet I believe it makes a better store of value than gold.
